Plant description:

This is undoubtedly one of the most popular large shrubs. It bears masses of fragrant flowers, from purple through lilac to white, from spring to summer. Semi-deciduous in colder climates, but only for a short time. New foliage has a bronze tinge that develops into pale green leaves.

Brunfelsia grandiflora bears leathery pointed foliage, narrow to oval, dark green above.

Uses in landscape design

Plant on the patio or near a window for its lovely scent. Excellent for screening, and makes a good container plant.

Planting instructions

Planting: Prefers light, well-drained soil. Dig a hole 60cm square and deep. Mix two thirds of the topsoil with one third compost, add one cup of bone meal or superphosphate and mix in well. Keep well mulched with compost and kraal manure.
Watering and feeding: Water regularly and feed during spring with a general fertiliser for flowering plants.
Pruning: Not necessary, but it can be shaped, or even pruned into a hedge, if desired.

Maintenance

Water regularly and don't allow soil to dry out completely.
