Nerium oleander (Oleander, Pride of Ceylon)
- Botanical name: Nerium oleander
- Common name(s): Oleander, Pride of Ceylon
- Categories: Shrubs and Perennials
Plant description:
These well-known free-flowering plants come in white, red, yellow, pink and salmon. There are also a number of double cultivars, including ones in pink and yellow; and a double pink flower with a variegated leaf. A popular cultivar, N. oleander ‘Mrs Rhoeding’, has double, salmon-pink flowers. ‘Dwarf Salmoni’ grows to only 700mm tall; it is a lovely small, round, shrub with leathery leaves and clusters of orange-pink flowers in summer and is a good pot specimen. Oleanders are extremely poisonous, but they taste so vile there have been few serious cases of poisoning. Single-flowering oleanders have been declared invasive in South Africa.
