Plant description:

This beautiful, rounded shrub has dense, shiny, dark green, leathery foliage. An exciting cultivar that becomes covered with flowers in August and continues flowering for two months. New spring foliage has a lovely red colour. Drought resistant, and able to withstand both wind and heat. It is slow growing. Flowers are followed by blue-black berries. The smaller R. x delacourii ‘Enchantress’ bears clusters of rose-pink flowers from late winter through to early summer.

One of the best shrubs for coastal gardens in the Cape, as it is drought tolerant and withstands wind and heat. It makes a lovely informal hedge or screen. It is an excellent plant for containers. Flowering branches are good material for the vase.

Planting instructions

Planting: It prefers fertile soil. Dig a hole 60cm square and deep. Mix two thirds of topsoil with one third compost in the bottom of the hole, add one cup of bone meal or superphosphate and mix well.
Watering and feeding:  Needs little attention. Water during dry weather and keep well mulched to achieve a faster growth rate. Feed in spring with general fertiliser.
Pruning: Not necessary, but can be cut back in winter to shape.
