Plant description:

Small tropical shrub with shiny, dark green leaves and showy, vivid crimson, tubular-shaped flowers borne in flat heads. Ixora javanica, from Java, is a large (±3m), lax-foliage shrub with shiny leaves and clusters of wide, flat-headed coral flowers. Ixora macrothyrsa ‘Super King’ is a tropical hybrid with 3m-tall erect branches, large glossy green leaves, and clusters of bright crimson flowers borne in flat heads. I. chinensis is a medium-sized tropical shrub with clusters of flat-headed flowers. Varieties with flowers in shades of pink, apricot, salmon, red and yellow are available.

Planting instructions

Planting: Likes well-drained, acid soil in a semi-shaded position. Dig a hole 60cm square and deep. Mix two thirds of the topsoil with one third acid compost in the bottom of the hole, add one cup of bone meal or superphosphate and mix well.
Watering and feeding: Water regularly and keep well mulched to conserve moisture. Feed during spring with a general fertiliser for flowering plants.
Pruning: It can be pruned to shape, and the flowers will appear on new shoots.
