Plant description:

Senecio belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae) – one of the largest genera of flowering plants. The hybrids make colourful additions to semishaded borders in winter and spring, and are also excellent pot plants. These daisy-like flowers come in shades of red, pink, blue, purple and white. Sow seed in trays from January to March; space seedlings 300mm apart. Flowers appear 20 weeks from germination. Watch for insects and fungal diseases. Indigenous species include purple-flowered S. elegans (Veld cineraria) and S. arenarius (Hongerblom), and the bushy, yellowflowered S. polyanthemoides.
