The most commonly used rooting medium is clean, well-washed river sand, but it has to be kept moist, as river sand dries out quickly.

A better choice is a half-and-half mixture of clean, washed river sand and acid compost, which retains moisture.

The simplest rooting medium is probably water. Many plants, such as coleus and impatiens, root very successfully in water.

Before attempting to root cuttings, dip the ends in a hormone powder, for better results.
