Before sowing lupins, prepare the soil well by adding compost, plus one cup of lime to every square metre of soil. Sow directly during autumn, spacing seedlings 250mm apart. Water regularly. Annual lupins are winter-growing and flower from spring to early summer. Pea-like flowers, in shades of blue, yellow, rose and white, are borne on upright spikes.
