A fast-growing annual, popular for flower arranging, with large sprays of small, starry pink or white flowers. It has a short life, about 10 weeks; sow in consecutive weeks to ensure a longer display. Add a handful of lime to the soil before sowing directly into beds. Sow in spring or summer, spacing seedlings 200mm apart. Flowers about eight weeks after germination. G. muralis ‘Gypsy’, a dwarf variety with delicate pink flowers, is ideal for containers and hanging baskets; it flowers 10–12 weeks after germination. G. paniculata, a perennial variety, provides lovely cut flowers; it is easy to grow from seed and flowers ± 20 weeks after germination.
